Helping Your Students Become Strong And Effective Leaders
When students take on the role of prefect or monitor – or any other position of leadership – they often have no idea of where to start or what is expected of them.
Also, going from one of the crowd to leading peers and friends can be a difficult and frightening transition.
Head Start is a workshop that concentrates on school prefect leadership training. This helps your whole school by showing your student leaders – prefects, peer mentors, student council members, head boy, head girl etc – how to develop and capitalise on their leadership skills.
This interactive workshop starts by showing your students how to lead as an individual. We then go on to look at leading and working within a team, and how to manage conflict.
The Head Start workshop is split into five sections:
- Leadership defined – understanding the roles and responsibilities of a student leader and how leadership can help you succeed and realise your own potential
- Influence and authority – how to use your skills as a student leader to help both teachers and pupils across the whole school
- Conflict management – how to step in and handle potentially volatile situations, rather than avoiding them, and calm the situation before trouble flares
- Team work and roles – how to understand team roles and responsibilities, as well as how to lead a team
- Accountability – how to use the positive influence that comes with leadership to guide other students
We also ask everyone on the programme to commit to one big goal for the year, which ties in with the goals of your school. Regular feedback sessions are scheduled where your student leaders report to your senior leadership team on their progress – ensuring this is an ongoing learning process.
Everyone benefits after your students have been taught in this workshop. Teachers have more support and the wider school benefits from the newfound skill and confidence of your student leaders.
Head Start can be delivered as a half-day (4 hours) or full day (6 hours) session, for up to 25 students.

Student leaders at Aldenham School in Elstree, Hertfordshire loved Head Start, saying it gave them the practical skills they needed to help others.
The senior leadership team at the Aldenham – an independent boarding and day school – were looking for a fun and creative way to improve leadership skills for KS5 prefects. They turned to Magnificent Generation and – through a half-day Head Start workshop – we engaged with a group of student leaders. The workshop mixed teaching and interactive sessions to deliver positive and lasting change to the school’s culture.
“Not only was the Head Start course both fun and inspiring, it built on the qualities we already have and we got to know each other’s strengths which has allowed us to gel and bond as a team.” Lydia – student, Aldenham School
“The workshop was a really helpful way to break down any insecurities and helped to bond our group together.” Jessica – student, Aldenham School
“Hope all is well. Just wanted to say a huge thanks for yesterday’s workshop. Dave was brilliant yet again with our young leaders. We would be happy for him to visit us again in the future.” Rav Samjawon – Senior Head of House, Haberdashers Aske’s
